You can be among the first in the world to play Crazy Taxi: World Tour in September, as SEGA plots a closed beta test for the long-awaited arcade reboot.
Sign ups are open now through 31st August on PS5, ahead of the test getting underway from 11th September through 13th September.
The beta will include two online multiplayer modes: Pickup Race and Cops ‘N’ Cabbies. There’ll also be four drivers, six cars, and two different maps – with the already announced West Coast among them.
Here’s how the blurb describes the multiplayer modes:
“In Pickup Race, up to 6 players will compete with each other to drop off as many passengers as possible within a set time limit, earning as much crazy money as possible.
In Cops ‘N’ Cabbies, players will be split into two teams competing against each other.
For either mode, they can be played in a Ranked Match, where players will be matchmade with each other, or in Custom Match, where custom lobbies and rules can be set.”
It’s worth noting that the single player story mode, planned for the full release, will not be included in the closed beta test.
There’s a new trailer above which shows off the San Francisco map, which will be familiar to anyone who played the original game.
I’ve also included some screenshots of the multiplayer modes.
Obviously the announcement of this game was embroiled in controversy, when SEGA confirmed it was using generative AI on some of the art assets.
But it’s since said it will replace all of those when the final game launches in 2027.
It’d be a shame for this game to be marred in controversy, because it’s comfortably one of my most anticipated releases of the generation.
