Wigan Warriors skipper Liam Farrell was set to return to the field in the coming weeks, but that won’t happen according to boss Matt Peet.

Farrell has missed the last four matches after suffering a shoulder injury during the 20-16 win over Hull FC at the end of June.

As a result, he has been sidelined for both wins over St Helens, as well as victories over Warrington and Huddersfield.

The veteran was set to return either this week or next, but he will now have to wait a little bit longer before making his comeback.

Peet has confirmed that Farrell, who turned 36 earlier this month, has suffered a setback, and will need at least another month before returning.

“He’s going to be out for an extended period,” Peet said in his weekly pre-match press. “He had his check-up last Friday, and we haven’t got the improvements we need around his shoulder.

“It will at least be another four weeks, and we’ll check in again.”

The news comes just a week after star back rower Junior Nsemba also suffered a setback with his hamstring injury. It means that Oliver Partington will likely keep his place in the back row, whilst the return of Sam Walters from suspension means that he can also slot in on the edge of the pack.

Wigan Warriors boss previews Leigh Leopards clash

Wigan make the short trip to Leigh Leopards this week, in what is the highlight game of round 21. The Warriors produced a 54-0 thumping over the Leopards earlier this season, but Peet is confident it will be a much more even game this time around.

“It will be nothing like that game,” he said. “It will be evenly matched and a great watch for the full 80 minutes.

“We’re well aware that they’re a different proposition than they were early in the season. It’s a long time ago, and they’ve developed massively.

“We’re more aware of how much they’ve improved and the recent form they’re in. They’re a very strong team, but there’s also some individuals who are flying at the moment.”

He continued: “It’s one of the most exciting games of the year for us, particularly going to Leigh.

“It’s a great occasion, they generate one of the best atmospheres in Super League which is a credit to the club. They’re a fantastic team in great form with some individuals in outstanding form.”
