Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament has swapped his bass guitar for his camera, and is now set to release a new photo book titled Since Forever.
Alongside his duties in the classic rock band, Ament has always been a keen photographer, and has used the vehicle of the book to unpack the host of negatives he has captured over the past three decades.
With the help of his brother, the prolific designer Barry Ament, the musician has specially selected the photos featured in Since Forever to reflect on the candid and unseen moments from the formation of Pearl Jam.
Announcing the upcoming release of the book on July 28th, Ament revealed that, in essence, the project came about out of the need to save his photography collection, as some of the oldest negatives were failing.
“If there was a goal, it was mostly to save the failing 30 year old negatives. It was Barry’s idea to make a book,” he said in a statement.
Reflecting further on the role his brother has played in the process, the bassist added, “Historically, my family will often get together by creating some kind of project or job. And in some ways, putting together this book was a job for Barry and me – a reason to hang out. Most of these photos are from 1990 to 1998. He was there for a lot of it. If he wasn’t, he was next door or a phone call away.”
When Pearl Jam got their big break from the grunge explosion that took place in the early 1990s, Ament was busily snapping away at the moments that would eventually transform the band into rock stalwarts.
However, he says that the vast majority of these photographs have gone unseen to fans for all this time, and as such Since Forever will feature no less than 250 black-and-white shots to pour over.
“90 per cent of these photos have never been seen before. Anybody who’s a PJ fan or a fan of what was going on in the 90s will dig it,” Ament added.
Details of selected book events featuring Ament and his brother Barry will be revealed over the coming weeks, but they will kickstart its launch with a special event at Ohana Festival on September 25th and 27th, with Pearl Jam headlining the main stage in between.
Since Forever can be pre-ordered from Pearl Jam’s website now, before being released in selected independent book shops on September 25th, 2026.
