Speaking on Ms Cox’s BBC Radio 2 morning show, the iconic comedian made a big announcement as he nears the end of his comedy tour which began in 2022.

Mr Kay is the latest guest Ms Cox has had on her programme after it launched earlier this month, with her first guest being American actor Tom Hanks.

She took over the slot, which runs from 6.30am to 9.30am, from Scott Mills who was sacked earlier this year from the corporation.

Her debut was well received by critics with The Independent giving it five stars, and reviewer Rachel McGrath commenting: “As first shows go, Cox surely couldn’t have hoped for better.”

Though she has never lived in Oxfordshire, she is linked to the county having supported Bicester-based charity Auditory Verbal.

Ms Cox was involved in an appeal for the organisation in 2018, when it was featured on television.

Unfortunately, earlier this year, the charity collapsed with a spokesperson citing “an increasingly challenging and turbulent environment”.

Now, on one of her radio shows this week, she hosted Peter Kay, who revealed an extension to his ongoing tour.

Having already visited Newcastle, Dublin, Birmingham, Belfast, Liverpool, and Sheffield, he will go on to Hull, Cardiff, Brighton and Blackpool, performing between September and November.

For this latest leg of the tour, all the profits will go to three charities: The Lily Foundation (UK mitochondrial disease charity), Maggie’s (everyone’s home of cancer care) and The Be More Laura Foundation (supporting research into brain cancer).

In addition, he revealed raising money for charity gives him “purpose” and that he thinks the charities he’s chosen are “overlooked and underfunded”.
