Eamon O’Carroll has insisted that he won’t be at St Helens in 2027 with the current interim coach to continue his plan to cross codes and take on a role in rugby union.

O’Carroll will take on a role with Welsh side Scarlets in 2027 but he’s still featured prominently in the betting odds to become the permanent St Helens head coach.

He’s currently priced at 10/1 with Super League sponsors Betfred and when asked about that, O’Carroll was quick to laugh the suggestion off as he affirmed his plans for next year.

“I’m committed to what I’m doing next year,” O’Carroll confirmed.

“It’s a huge honour and a privilege to be in the position that I’m currently in, I’m really proud, but my job at the moment is to do the best I can with this group, and ultimately come the end of the year I want to leave the group and the club in the best position that I possibly can, so that’s my focus.”

Why a new St Helens head coach has reasons to be excited

O’Carroll will have a job on his hands leaving the club in the best possible position given how many players are out for the season and the fact that Saints are currently outside the top six, however, he remained confident that whoever does land the job will be walking into a positive environment.

Asked about what sort of chance a new coach would have to hit the ground running, O’Carroll responded: “Really good, obviously I’m in here every day so I understand where we’re at currently as a club.

“I think it’s an exciting time to be at St Helens, there’s a lot of good young men coming through the club and it’s going to be an exciting time for the future.

“I think our experienced players are getting more experienced, and I think going through this little bit of adversity is going to be really good in the long term, people might not recognise that or understand that currently at the moment, but in adversity we grow, so I think the club’s in a really strong position.”
