The final album from the iconic grunge band Soundgarden is now officially being mixed.
Fans have known for some time that Soundgarden has one last album up their sleeve with the late frontman Chris Cornell, who tragically took his own life in 2017. Now, drummer Matt Cameron has confirmed that the final project is in its final stages.
Fans were teased with the new music on the eighth anniversary of Cornell’s passing. At the time, in 2025, they shared warmly that it felt “good and invigorating to hear Chris singing from over that horizon”.
Now, the crew has made it a step further, with Cameron confirming on the Let There Be Talk podcast that “we’re just gonna try to get this thing mixed, get it over the finish line, and then hopefully we’ll have a better idea what’s gonna come next.”
Though no release date has been confirmed, Cameron added that the band is “just taking it one step at a time ’cause it’s been kind of a long process just to get to here.”
The former Pearl Jam member was hinting at the unfortunate legal battle with the frontman’s widow, Vicky Cornell, regarding unpaid royalties and the rights to unfinished material, which was finally settled in 2023.
Now, the drummer has confirmed that the album will consist of eight never-heard-before tracks, adding, “I think that that’s pretty much all there is with vocals.”
He went on, “We had some instrumentals left over that [guitarist] Kim Thayil wants to work on. So maybe we’ll do some new stuff together, which would be fine by me.”
Earlier this month, Thayil gave his own update on the album’s estimated release date, admitting that the band is “really aiming for next year” to bring the project into the world, explaining, “We have to book studio time here and there, and we have to have the availability of the producer and the engineer and the band members.”
