Zac Shaw said he felt like he was running for his late mother after winning the Commonwealth Games T12 100m title.
Shaw had the message ‘Gold for you Mum’ attached to his bib after the race in memory of his mother Evette, who passed away last August.
Shaw told TNT Sports: “It’s been a year full of grief. My mum passed last year. Every eye appointment I went to my mum would be there with me. To lose that…
“Part of my grief journey was to come here and win this medal. I said yesterday I’m not running for me, I’m running for both of us, I felt like that today.”
Shaw said the gold was a reward for a year of hard work, adding: “I’ve been thinking about this every singe day… last year I pulled out of the World Championships and it was all for this. I’m so happy.
“I was nervous. It’s Championship racing, it’s not about times it’s about who crosses the line first. I had to work that race, it definitely wasn’t the perfect race at all but all the hard work comes off.
“I’ve worked so hard this past year, I’m so happy.”
