The decision came in 2017 when Davidson left her job at JP Morgan to become Scotland’s first full-time female professional referee. While the opportunity fulfilled a lifelong ambition, it came at a significant financial cost.
Speaking to The Guardian, Davidson admitted the decision shocked those closest to her.
“My salary was cut by more than 50 per cent and my family and friends couldn’t quite believe it,” she said.
Despite the financial sacrifice, Davidson never doubted she had made the right call.
She explained that until then she had followed a conventional career path, completing university before securing a well-paid job in finance. However, the chance to officiate rugby full-time proved impossible to ignore.
Davidson also revealed her manager at JP Morgan fully supported her decision.
“My boss was a huge supporter of my refereeing and he was so gutted I was leaving. But he also said: ‘If you doubt your decision, I’ll be throwing you out of this office. The opportunity to go down this path is once in a lifetime.’”
The gamble has certainly paid off.
Since making the switch, Davidson has broken barrier after barrier, becoming Scotland’s first female professional referee, the first woman to referee a men’s Six Nations match, and the first woman to take charge of a men’s European club final. She has also been recognised as one of the world’s elite officials, cementing her place among rugby’s top referees.
