Charli XCX has become the first British female artist to land two number one albums in the Official Charts in the same year.
The global pop star recently released Music, Fashion, Film, her eighth studio album, following on from Wuthering Heights, the soundtrack to Emerald Fennell’s latest novel adaptation released this February.
Wuthering Heights, which includes the hit single ‘House’ featuring The Velvet Underground legend John Cale, reached the top of the Official Charts upon its release.
Now, Music, Fashion, Film has also found its way to the top of the charts, making the Essex star the first British artist to achieve this double-whammy feat.
The latest project, which features a surprising collaboration with cult filmmaker David Cronenberg, is her fourth project to get to number one, following Crash in 2022 and Brat in 2024.
Therefore, the ‘Apple’ singer is now part of an elite group of acts who have scored two UK chart-topping albums within twelve months, including The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, Ed Sheeran, and international acts like Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Diana Ross.
To celebrate the album’s release, Charli XCX played a special album launch show in Nashville, where many of the tracks enjoyed their live debut, before headlining Lollapalooza on July 31st.
In other promotional efforts, the performer also released a self-directed black-and-white film as a visual companion piece, starring her collaborators AG Cook and Finn Keane.
Outside of the album, Charli also released the B-side tracks on iTunes, after sharing them on social media throughout the run-up to the release. Fans can now purchase ‘I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day and Night’, ‘Playboy Bunny’, and ‘If You Take the Music Then What Has She Got?’.
Far Out gave the star’s latest album a two-star review, observing, “There’s wry self-awareness, but that shouldn’t be mistaken for substance. Just as the ‘rock’ amid the rave shouldn’t be mistaken for reinvention. If you’re a teenager discovering this aesthetic for the first time, then you might find it thrilling.”
