Newcastle United’s announcement to confirm the appointment of Matthias Jaissle has been held up by paperwork.

The German head coach is in La Manga with the squad but the club are awaiting papers from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli before they can unveil him as boss.

Chronicle Live has been told that the deal and appointment is still “progressing” and the hope is that the Jaissle era will start in due course.

Our information is that Jaissle has been with the squad and officials over the weekend and joined the team on Saturday after agreeing a contract with the Magpies.

A club statement on Friday had read: “Newcastle United can announce that Eddie Howe has informed the club of his decision to step down as head coach.

“The club has accepted Eddie’s decision and would like to thank him for his extraordinary contribution.

“Also leaving the club are coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, and head of performance Dan Hodges.”

Newcastle also added: “The process to recruit a new head coach is at an advanced stage and updates will be communicated shortly.”

The Magpies are due to spend a week in the La Manga resort for an intense training programme before finishing off their time in Spain with a game against La Liga outfit Valencia.

Jaissle’s first game in charge is set to take place at the Mestalla, 10 days after Howe’s final act as boss when the black and whites were mauled 4-1 by Bristol City.

Howe then resigned after the game and told staff when the team got back to Tyneside after almost five years in charge.

Tribute to a true footballing legend, Kevin Keegan

As Britain’s only multi -Ballon d’Or winner, his deeds on the pitch for Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle were legendary in their own right.

But the beauty of Keegan is that he was about far more than kicking or heading a ball. He was a man of the people, the authentic working class idol who always put the fans first and was never too busy to turn down an autograph request or, in more recent times, a selfie.

This special edition covers off the many highs, and the occasional low, of a career in which Special K was the most popular footballer of his generation and then a manager the fan on the street could warm to and identify with.

To slightly alter the words of the great man himself, We’d Love It if you enjoy reading about the many memories. LOVE IT!
