Lomax is back involved at training after recovering from the fractures, which needed plating, sustained in a collision in the Warrington game on 11 June.
It was the second freak injury sustained by the veteran half back, who missed two months in spring with a dislocated wrist.
But there is an indefatigable spirit within the 35-year-old Billinger, who is remarkably in his 18th season at the club.
And with Saints facing a massive challenge for the remainder of the season, with injuries mounting, the head coach departing and youngsters being blooded – having the input of an old head like Lomax is invaluable.
Interim coach Eamon O’Carroll said: “In terms of his input, there is no difference to what Jonny does when he’s playing and when he’s not been playing. He’s been fantastic and is a huge help to me.
“He is well-respected within the group everyone knows that, so when he speaks, everyone listens.
“He doesn’t necessarily say a lot, but when he does talk, it’s really impactful.
“I think with having so many young lads around the squad, it’s comforting for them having someone like Jonny around.”
Given the nature of the injury, it was assumed that Lomax’s season may have been over.
But O’Carroll believes the former skipper could potentially return to the field before the year is out – but they remain cautious.
“We have to be smart with him and do the right thing by Jonny, but he’ll lead on a lot of that to be honest in terms of how he’s feeling.
“But clearly he looks as fit as ever there.
“We just have to be cautious with the type of injury that he has had, and we don’t want to put Jonny in a position that’s going to leave him vulnerable. “So, we’ll continue to monitor it daily, and again, let Jonny lead on a lot of that,” O’Carroll said.
