Ahead of what he hopes is another big spring for his and father Anthony’s stable, Sam Freedman has identified three horses he expects big things from.
MOST LIKELY GROUP 1 WINNER: TOM KITTEN
Freedman did not hesitate when asked who the stable’s most likely Group 1 winner this spring will be and it’s easy to understand why, with the star gelding, who was formerly in the care of James Cummings, arriving at his new yard in superb condition.
“Tom Kitten is obviously a horse that needs no introduction,” he said.
“If we can place him correctly and point him in the right direction and stay out of his way he might be able to snag one (a G1).”
It could come as soon as August 30 – Tom Kitten is a $6 chance to win the Memsie Stakes (1400m) – while he could end up in the Cox Plate, for which he is a $21 hope.
HORSES TO WATCH: TENTYRIS & TONKIN
One-time Golden Slipper favourite Tentyris and speedy mare Tonkin are the two horses Freedman believes can stamp themselves as genuine contenders this preparation.
Impressive colt Tentyris will be aimed at the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and Freedman says the galloper has returned in fine order from injury.
“He was Slipper favourite after his really good win in the Todman,” he said.
“He had a tibial stress fracture after that. He’s under saddle at the moment just having a nice slow build-up.
“You won’t see him in the early part of the spring, we’ve just taken our time to let him come to hand. He’s come back bigger and stronger.”
Tentyris is a $15 chance in early Coolmore Stud Stakes markets.
Tonkin is unbeaten and whilst she is only a BM70 winner, Freedman says the now mare is closing in on becoming a more complete package ahead of the spring.
“She’s one that’s pretty exciting, she’s pretty untapped,” he said.
“She’s certainly a filly that has come back the best she has ever come back. She’s probably a mare that will furnish through this prep and harness her energy.”
