Former Italy head coach Kieran Crowley has revealed he spoke to Saracens’ Alex Lozowski ahead of the 2022 Six Nations about a possible switch to Italy—but Lozowski declined.

The 32-year-old, capped five times by England (last in 2018), qualifies for Italy through his Italian grandparent.

While he passed in 2022, Italy’s strong showings in the 2024 and 2025 Six Nations could make him rethink. His skill and versatility would be a big boost to their ambitions.

Lozowski’s path to rugby could have gone very differently. He was in Chelsea FC’s academy until 16 before choosing rugby. He later joined Leeds Carnegie Academy after A-levels and earned an Economics degree at Leeds University.

From Leeds, he moved to Wasps for two seasons before joining Saracens, immediately making an impact with four tries in his first five Premiership games.

He became a key player in Saracens’ domestic and European success, earning an England call-up for the 2017 Argentina tour and five caps overall.

After a loan at Montpellier, Lozowski returned to Saracens in 2021, kicking off the season with a Player of the Match display against Bristol.

He earned a surprise England recall under Borthwick during the 2024 autumn internationals and 2025 Six Nations but didn’t feature—leaving the door open for a potential switch to Italy.

Dominici played 67 times for his country and won the French championship five times with Stade Français before retiring in 2008. In recent years he had worked as a pundit for French radio and TV before his death in 2020.

WILKINSON SAID: “His opportunism, his flair, his game reading, his sheer explosivity to really change a game is something that sticks in my memory.”

DID YOU KNOW? Dominci appeared in three World Cups for his country in 1999, 2003 and 2007, scoring eight tries over that time.
