George O’Connor says it would be a “dream come true” if the new Worcestershire recruit was to make his Metro Bank One Day Cup bow at Hove on Friday.
Signing on with the Club just last weekend for the remainder of the competition, George has been around the team for the entirety of the summer, impressing with performances in the 2nd XI since his debut back in 2024.
With all-rounders Matthew Waite and Ethan Brookes on the injury list, and seam bowling stocks having taken a hit courtesy of the hip-injury sustained by Jack Home, O’Connor was added to the squad ahead of last week’s trip to Essex.
With Ben Gibbon having only recently returned from a hand laceration, Adam Finch away at The Hundred and Tom Taylor having featured in every competitive fixture so far this summer, O’Connor is in contention to make his competitive debut for the Rapids at Hove on Friday.
Having trialled with other counties in more recent times, the tall and pacey seamer impressed both Alan Richardson and Richard Jones in recent weeks, starring for the Rapids in their 50-over National Counties Showcase game against Herefordshire last month.
If given the opportunity to play, O’Connor said it would be a real honour to represent the Club.
“I was on the golf course actually when I got a call from Richo saying that he’d like me to sign for the rest of the Metro Bank.
“It was a pretty incredible feeling.
“It has been a lifelong dream to be a cricketer and be told that it’s finally going to come true was a very happy you know, quite emotional moment in my life.
“To be told everything that you do to get to a stage in life has worked, I mean, that phone call was one of the better ones you get in life.
“Everyone’s been really kind and caring and gone out their way to say hi and everyone’s made a big effort to include me on and off the pitch, which has been really nice.”
