“I have set the records for the first time, so it’s open for anyone to have a go at, but after my experience last night I probably would not recommend trying it,” Woodward told the BBC.

He added: “My legs felt like jelly. I probably will not want to do that again, to be honest.”

The Penny Farthing Club, which was founded in 2013, runs training courses, social and charity rides, track racing, Victorian costume events, and international penny farthing polo.
