The technology at the heart of the agreement is an integrated BESS solution, in containers with liquid cooling, built around CATL’s large-format lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The agreement covers a total of 526 containers, each with a capacity of 5.64 MWh, all configured for continuous four-hour discharge.
CATL’s technology will support the performance and long-term value of ContourGlobal’s projects through its own cell degradation management system, which continuously monitors and mitigates the aging of each cell. The batteries are designed to operate reliably throughout the entire life of the projects, and CATL further commits to recovering and recycling the units at the end of their life, in line with European regulatory requirements on battery sustainability and circular economy principles.
This agreement marks the first deployment of this technology within ContourGlobal’s portfolio and adds to its fleet a set of design features, including an integrated liquid cooling architecture and a built-in fire detection and suppression system, which ensure stable operation over a wide range of temperatures, mitigate thermal runaway, and guarantee compliance with the highest applicable safety and certification standards in the industry.
In addition, ContourGlobal projects that use CATL technology will be ready to support future grid stability services, including grid-forming functionality when required by system operators. ContourGlobal BESS Strategy
Currently the company has 3 GWh of BESS projects in operation in Europe and the Americas, including in Bulgaria, a standalone 202 MW/500 MWh project, one of the largest in Eastern Europe, and in Chile, where the company operates 2.5 GWh of BESS through the hybrid projects Víctor Jara and Quillagua, located in the Atacama Desert regions of Tarapacá and Antofagasta.
