If you just want to Remote Play your PS5 games, then Sony’s PS Portal is a much cheaper alternative to the Steam Deck.
But if you already own Valve’s handheld – or another Linux-based PC portable – you may be interested in a new app named Asobi, currently in testing.
While we’ve praised the virtue of Android-based solutions like PX Play in the past, this particular option comes with one distinct advantage: PS Plus Premium cloud streaming.
The software currently only supports the game catalogue, so there’s no compatibility with your wider PS5 library, but it’s something the team says it’s working on.
Remember, you will need an active PS Plus Premium subscription to take advantage of this functionality, just like on the PS Portal.
It’ll be interesting to see whether Sony turns a blind eye to this.
At the end of the day, its PS Portal is not really competing with PC handhelds, and this solution still requires customers to stump up for PlayStation’s priciest subscription – the platform holder’s not exactly losing out financially by letting this software exist.
One thing worth noting here is that Asobi is currently in testing, so the maker has unlocked the full 60fps, 4K experience for free. Once the playtest ends, the free tier will be restricted to 30fps, 1080p and you’ll need to pod out an as-yet undisclosed sum for the full feature set.
Still, I’ve been reading some really positive anecdotes about this. Unfortunately, I don’t have a PC handheld so I can’t test it for myself, but let me know if you choose to try it in the comments section below.
