Now, as of Tuesday, August 11, the murals are being covered up so that the area can be used for the film, which will see Robert Pattinson return as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the sequel to the 2022 box-office success.

Scotland’s largest city will double up as the crime-ridden metropolis for a fourth time for The Batman: Part II.

Production crews on the superhero movie have arrived in the city this month, with filming taking place at a number of locations in the city centre over a three-week period from August 18.

Filming locations include Bothwell Street, Wellington Street, Glasgow Bridge, Broomielaw, Newton Street (under the Kingston Bridge), North Street, Pitt Street and the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 75 along the River Clyde.

The Herald exclusively revealed in November that The Batman: Part II was lining up a shoot in the city after Luke Hull, the production designer for the long-awaited Matt Reeves DC sequel, shared photos from what was likely his location scout in Glasgow. 

The towering murals reimagine the under-bridge space that forms part of the Glasgow Riverside Innovation District (GRID).

The installation features artworks by a cohort of local, national and international artists: Phill Blake, Mr Cenz, Conzo Throb, Mikhaela Martin, Vernis, Molly Hankinson, Erin Bradley Scott, Robert Cook, Good Night Vienna, Wee Thistles, Frodrik, Emsky, Ikul, Keiti Forbes, Gillian Law, Christian Kerr, Kitsa, Nitram Joke and Aroe.

Together, the 23 painted pillars create a striking open-air gallery which has now been covered up by the film crews.

After filming is complete, crews are usually bound to turn a location back to how they found it.

The Herald understands that the murals are being covered as part of the film production, and that the production company will cover all the costs of reinstatement – SWG3 remain involved, and artists will be undertaking the reinstatement immediately after filming is over.

The Batman Part II is officially scheduled to be released in cinemas on February 18, 2028.

Speaking about the movie in September 2024, director Matt Reeves said: “It’s another mystery that’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places that he couldn’t even anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie.” 

Reeves also gave a concrete hint about the villain in September last year, stating: “One of the explorations, for me, was to do something that pushes even further into the character of Bruce Wayne because the first story is so much about the Batman. I always wanted, in the movies, to make sure [they were] focused on his character.

“I never wanted to lose Rob at the centre of these stories – and that’s what we set our aim on. So, we had to pick the right villain that digs into his past. I won’t tell you where we ended up but we’re super excited about it, and I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before.”  

Scenes for The Batman – which made over £650 million at the worldwide box office – were filmed in Glasgow in February of 2020, with the Necropolis and Glasgow Cathedral prominently featured in the movie’s final scenes. 

Last year Glasgow hosted several major productions, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and JJ Abrams’ sci-fi fantasy movie The Great Beyond starring Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, and Samuel L. Jackson. 

Glasgow hosted 140 film and TV productions in 2024, resulting in an estimated local expenditure of £33 million. Noted productions of scale included Shetland, the second series of Apple TV’s The Buccaneers, BBC’s The Bombing of Pan Am 103, Sky’s Lockerbie: A search for Truth and Hollywood blockbuster The Running Man.
