Art On Your Doorstep has brought iconic works of art to town in partnership with the National Gallery, and it is quite the sight to behold.

There is a walk through the town, one of seven locations across the UK to feature this project, so I decided to try it out.

Dotted around the town are 18 seminal paintings from across history.

Featuring the likes of Vincent van Gogh and Hans Holbein the Younger, this initiative encourages locals and visitors alike to engage with works of art that they might not otherwise have access to.

My journey began at the Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, where I picked up my map and began my 18-stop tour.

I was taken through back streets and along the busy St James Square, before going around the bus station and travelling back up, past Newport Minster and along the River Medina, finishing at the Harbour Office.

I’m on work experience with the County Press and this art trail was the perfect opportunity for me to see some of Newport.

I live in London, but I’m a regular visitor to the Isle of Wight, as it’s where my mum is from and I still have family here.

However, I had not explored Newport much, and the art trail was my chance to do so — and I would recommend it to any other island visitors as well as islanders themselves.

I got to experience the hustle and bustle of the island’s administrative capital during the holiday season, and I was joined by various others doing the walk, which shows the popularity of the initiative for the locals.

It took me about an hour to complete, but there are plenty of lovely pubs and restaurants along the way to break up the journey, should you want to.

Why not make a day of it?

Art On Your Doorstep is a wonderful initiative that brings art to people where they live.

It allows them to appreciate and experience the art in the comfort of their local area rather than travelling, possibly at great expense and inconvenience, to see them in London or somewhere else, and if you haven’t done it yet, I’d thoroughly recommend it if you fancy getting out and about.

The art trail is in place until October.
