Experts have advised drivers to take urgent action ahead of new number plate changes taking place in less than two weeks across the country.
From Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the new “76” number plate will be rolled out to the latest car models to hit forecourts.
This is the second number plate change following the introduction of the “26” registration in March, with both months bringing a huge uptick in car sales.
The new “76” number plate will adorn any cars registered between September 1, 2026, and February 28, 2027, at which point new cars will have a “27” plate.
Motorists must adhere to strict rules when it comes to their number plates, or they could be slapped with a hefty fine.
New licence plates must be fitted with a British Standard number, namely BS AU 145e, and must be made from a reflective material.
They must have black characters on a white background for the front plate and black characters on a yellow background on the rear.
However, drivers are permitted to have 3D characters, display certain flags, symbols and identifiers, and display a green flash if it is a zero emission vehicle.

If a vehicle has an incorrectly displayed number plate, the driver can be fined up to £1,000, and the vehicle will fail its MOT test.
The current vehicle registration format was first introduced in 2001 and is made up of two letters, two numbers and three letters.
The first two letters refer to the region where the vehicle was first registered, followed by the two numbers when it was issued and three letters chosen at random.
Memory tags are used to denote where the vehicle was first registered, with popular combinations including BA-BY for Birmingham, CA-CY for Wales, and LA-LY for London.

When displaying flags, identifiers and stickers, drivers can show the Union flag, Cross of St George, Cross of St Andrew and Red Dragon of Wales on the left-hand side of the plate.
If someone plans to drive abroad, they must display a UK sticker if the plate has numbers and letters only, a GB identifier with the Union flag, an EU flag, or a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales.
The Government has reiterated how UK stickers have replaced the old white oval GB stickers. The GB stickers should be covered or removed if driving abroad.

However, he warned: “The mistake some buyers make is allowing the registration plate to become the deciding factor rather than the overall value of the car.
“A vehicle carrying a brand-new ’76’ registration may look newer, but that doesn’t automatically make it better value.
“Buyers should still compare prices, check finance offers and consider how quickly the vehicle is likely to depreciate over the first few years.”
Mr Raffell advised drivers to buy the car that is best for their needs, rather than immediately opting for a vehicle just because it has the latest number plate.
