Lenox, MA- August 22, 2026- The musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra have unanimously voted to authorize the first strike in the orchestra’s history. The contract expires at 11:59 PM on Sunday August 23, 2026.
In spite of the turmoil of the last six months caused by BSO leadership’s decision to terminate the Orchestra’s music director, they have failed to agree to a collective bargaining agreement that would begin to restore the trust that they have destroyed and offer a fair contract to the musicians who are the heart and soul of the BSO.
This is a preliminary shot, some way prior to any possible walkout. Negotiations will continue through the weekend. BSO president and CEO Chad Smith issued a statement to the effect that he respected the musicians’ right to authorize a strike, as ‘part of the negotiating process.’
He added: ‘Our focus remains on the negotiations and the ongoing constructive conversations. We are committed to reaching an agreement with competitive pay and benefits that enhances collaboration with the Players.’
