Two beach warden trucks were recovered from thick mud on Brean beach on Thursday (August 27th), after becoming stuck in the sea during the rescue of a child.
Weston Recovey used a fleet of vehicles – including a WW2 Scammell Pioneer tank recovery truck – to pull the two trucks up the beach with winches, as pictured here.
The spectacle attracted a crowd of onlookers to watch the unusual recovery operation, which lasted around two hours. It comes after two tides had completely covered the stranded trucks.
Somerset Council, which runs the beach warden service, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This was an unfortunate incident which happened while our Beach Safety Warden was rescuing a child who was trapped in the mud on an incoming tide.”
“Crucially they got the child to safety but unfortunately his vehicle became stuck and a further vehicle which went out to assist also became stuck. Both were caught by the tide. Thankfully nobody was injured.“
A trail of leaking oil was seen emerging from one of the stuck vehicles and a clean-up of the beach area was being planned.
One eyewitness to Wednesday’s incident added: “One of the trucks got stuck and called for backup. Then the other one came to pull it out and got stuck as well. It was quite frantic for a time.”
