After an incredible battle in today’s reserves semi-final between Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos, one Super League forward will hope that the disciplinary panel are lenient with him.

It was the Wolves who progressed through to the Grand Final, defeating last year’s Champions 24-22 after the game went to golden point.

Whilst the defeat will be the biggest thing on Leeds’ mind at the moment, the Rhinos will also be hoping that towering forward Jeremiah Mata’utia doesn’t pick up any charges from the Match Review Panel.

The overseas prop, who has made 10 Super League appearances, though nine of those came with Hull FC, is set to leave Leeds at the end of the season, having only signed an initial one-year deal at Headingley. The club have an option to extend his contract, but Brad Arthur has confirmed previously that they won’t be taking that up.

Standing at 6’5, the 22-year-old was penalised multiple times in the game, with one incident leaving the Warrington fans calling for a card.

In the second half of the game, he produced a shoulder charge with no attempt to wrap on a Warrington man, forcing referee Matty Clayton to award a penalty.

Then, in golden point, he ultimately cost his side the game, with a dangerous high tackle on Charlie McKler leaving the Wire forward needing medical attention.

McKler, who had already scored twice, broke free and looked on for a try, before full-back Fergie McCormack brought him down. As he was falling, Mata’utia came in over the top with a swinging arm, and seemingly caught the falling Wire man around the head.

As a result, the referee awarded a penalty, but if the Wire faithful had their way, it would have been a harsher sanction. The incident was put on report, so it will be reviewed by the disciplinary.

With this not being a Super League game, the verdict will likely come on Friday, alongside the disciplinary from the Women’s Super League, Academy and Championship.
