Escaped wallaby spotted in the Liskeard Business Park
A wallaby has been seen hopping through the Cornish countryside again, leaving locals baffled. Scot Weller was driving into Liskeard when he spotted what he first mistook for a dog in the road ahead.
The owner of Original Cornish Pasties says the creature was bouncing along the carriageway in front of him during his morning commute. He then realised it was a wallaby.
In June, Neil Hardyman was on his way to work at the Liskeard Business Park in Quimperle Way, off the A390, when he spotted the marsupial looking lost and conspicuously out of place.
He filmed the unusual encounter at 6am on June 3 and his mate Darren Marlow shared it in a local Facebook group and with CornwallLive. Like Scot, Neil “couldn’t believe” his eyes.
Scot, who spotted the wallaby in the early hours on August 24, said several vehicles were travelling behind him and, concerned the animal might be struck, he decided to tail it.

The wallaby then hopped onto the pavement and came to a halt. He said: “But then I realised it was hopping and that it was a wallaby on the loose.”
Scot drew up alongside and remarked to the escaped animal: “Hello, you’re not from around here, are you?”.
The creature then vanished down a side street towards the local Co-op.
“It was a bit sad that he was out there on his own, as there can’t have been much for it to eat because of the heatwave we’ve been having,” Scot said.
“I just thought, ‘Poor thing, he’s lost.'”
He contacted police via 101 to report the sighting, though the call handler initially struggled to grasp what he was describing.
“I told her, ‘There’s a wallaby hopping up the street,’ and she replied, ‘The Australian animal, like a small kangaroo? Right, OK.'”.
The wallaby has reportedly been spotted elsewhere around Liskeard. A leisure centre employee is also reported to have caught sight of the creature over the weekend on the secondary school playing fields.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson confirmed that the animal had vanished by the time officers reached the scene.
They said: “We were called to a report of a wallaby seen on Dean Street, Liskeard, shortly before 6am today, August 24. Officers carried out an area search but did not locate the animal.”
Local animal park Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary, which is located at Trecangate, Lanreath outside Liskeard, said it has been contacted by people about the escaped wallaby.
A wallaby was previously captured on camera appearing unphased as it made its way down the A39, near Newquay at around 10.30pm on August 22, 2024.

Henry Hallam, from Truro, managed to capture footage of the animal on his phone. At the time he said it “stopped to give us a stare” before moving on its way.
Henry said: “We were driving along in Fraddon, and all of a sudden were slowing up as this kangaroo was hopping along. He paused in front of the car lights before resuming his journey down the road.
“The kangaroo was acting much as though there was nothing amiss, and he was meant to be there. He stopped to give us a stare and then continued on his way. How strange.”
Sadly the marsupial Henry spotted and filmed was later discovered dead by the side of the road after being hit by a car.
