Luca Guadagino’s new movie starring Andrew Garfield as OpenAI founder Sam Altman has just released a first-look image ahead of its UK debut. Titled Artificial, the film follows the tumultuous days of Altman being fired and reinstated as CEO within a week in November 2023.
Years after Garfield played Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher’s The Social Network, the star is back on the big screen in the role of a real-life tech entrepreneur in Altman, who’s been at the helm of OpenAI, the AI company which developed ChatGPT, since 2019.
Acquired by Neon after Amazon MGM Studios dropped it in June this year, Artificial boasts a stacked cast, including Top Gun: Maverick star Monica Barbaro as Open AI’s chief technology officer Mira Murati, Yura Borisov as the OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever who ousts Altman, and The Studio’s Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk.

The film has confirmed its first UK screening on 11 October as part of the 70th BFI London Film Festival, which runs in cinemas across the capital between 7 and 18 October. Prior to its UK debut, Artificial will receive its world premiere at New York Film Festival on 5 October.
Earlier this year, Variety reported that Amazon MGM Studios had dropped Guadagnino’s nearly finished film amid Amazon’s new partnership with OpenAI, which aimed to expand OpenAI’s use of Amazon Web Services and develop custom AI models and saw a significant investment on Amazon’s part.
“We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker — not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue,” a spokesperson for Amazon said at the time. “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”
Artificial will receive its world premiere at New York Film Festival. In the UK, the film screens as part of the 70th BFI London Film Festival, running 7-18 October.
