The Musselburgh Amateur Golf Championship, it is said, is closely linked to the history of The Open Championship, which is due to be played at St Andrews next year.
The 101st Musselburgh Amateur Golf Championship will tee off at Musselburgh Golf Club at Monktonhall.
The 100th playing of the competition took place at Musselburgh Links, The Old Course, in 2025.
The Open Championship was played on a rota of three golf courses – Prestwick, St Andrews and Musselburgh – between 1874 and 1889. A total of six Opens were played at Musselburgh and it was due to be played there in 1892, when the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers moved their base from Musselburgh to Muirfield.
Courier Sport was told by organisers: “Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, aggrieved at The Open Championship moving to Muirfield, promoted their own tournament, effectively in competition with The Open, and with a larger purse, although matters were then resolved amicably to let both competitions take place.
“The Musselburgh Open was then played prior to The Open, including in 1900 prior to The Open at St Andrews, and in 1901 prior to The Open at Muirfield.
“In 1906, the Musselburgh professional tournament was won by Harry Vardon, who holds the record for the most Open Championship victories, winning six times during his career.”
The Musselburgh Amateur Championship was then started in 1912, as there was to be no professional tournament held in the town that year.
At a meeting which had been called to discuss the arrangement for the professional tournament, it was agreed that the money held in balance should be used “for the purpose of stimulating interest in amateur golf locally”.
Musselburgh Golf Club at Monktonhall is an Open Championship final qualifying venue and hosts the US Kids Golf European Championship.
