Tadej Pogačar has ended his 2026 season

After sustaining a concussion, displaced left clavicle fracture, stable C7 cervical fracture and multiple abrasions from his crash at the Vuelta a España, UAE Team Emirates XRG’s Tadej Pogačar has ended his 2026 season. The Slovenian was forced to abandon a Grand Tour for the first time after he hit a rock in the road towards the finale of Stage 8 in Xeraco.

As for the ramifications, this means there will be a new World Champion in the men’s road race, Pogačar will not defend his European Championship title on home roads in Slovenia, and a sixth consecutive Il Lombardia title is off the cards.

Enric Mas leads Vuelta a España

Enric Mas (Movistar) is still top of the heap at the Vuelta a España. The Spaniard inherited red after Tadej Pogačar’s abandonment on Stage 8 and has been in the form of his life as he looks to seal what will be his first Grand Tour victory if he’s still in red in Granada on Sunday. He notably dropped the rest of the favourites on Stage 12’s finish atop Calar Alto, leaving the likes of Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) behind.

Gall sits in second on the final rest day, 2min 06sec behind, with Roglič having fallen to third following Stage 14, 2min 10sec back. It’s then a large gap to Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) in fourth at over four minutes down. Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) completes the top five and still leads the way in the youth classification.

La Vuelta Femenina moves to October

Buried amidst a UCI press release that detailed movements on improving rider safety and GPS tracking, it was revealed that La Vuelta Femenina will move from its May position on the calendar to October from next year. The race took place from 3rd-9th May this year and was won by UAE Team ADQ’s Paula Blasi. In 2027, it will be held from 3rd-10th October instead.

The Vuelta a Burgos Feminas organisers also requested a move and the race will now be held on 6th-10th May 2027. This season, Fenix-Premier Tech’s Yara Kastelijn topped the standings as the race ran from 21st-24th May. Elsewhere, Eschborn-Frankfurt returns to its traditional date on 1st May in 2027.

Tim Wellens wins Tour of Britain Men

It might not have worked out for them at the Vuelta, but UAE Team Emirates XRG at least came away with a GC win at the Tour of Britain Men thanks to Tim Wellens on debut. The Belgian hopped into the race lead thanks to his second place to Decathlon’s Cees Bol on Stage 4, keeping safe throughout the final day to win by 42sec ahead of Lewis Askey (NSN Cycling Team).

Soudal Quick-Step’s Jasper Stuyven completed the podium, finishing on the same time as Decathlon CMA CGM’s Daan Hoole in fourth. Michal Schuran (Team United Shipping) won the mountains classification, Filippo Ganna (Netcompany Ineos) the points and Elliot Rowe (Great Britain) the youth.

Latest transfer moves

The wheels keep on turning and riders keep on moving as transfer season enters full flow. Casper Pedersen will depart Soudal Quick-Step for Uno-X Mobility as Lennert van Eetvelt leaves Lotto-Intermarché for NSN Cycling Team. Lotto-Intermarché meanwhile just penned Stan Dewulf and Clément Venturini to two-year deals.
