Zak Hardaker admits his move to York Knights came together quickly, but says the club’s ambitions made the decision an easy one.
Hardaker, 34, had initially signed a one-year extension with Hull FC for next season and was set to remain as one of the club’s leadership figures.
However, following swift developments in the transfer market, the hard-working utility will instead link up with Mark Applegarth’s squad next season.
“I’m really excited to be joining York for the ’27 and ’28 season,” he said.
“It’s all come to fruition quickly, but after speaking to Mash (Applegarth) and hearing the aspirations of York and where they’re wanting to go, and the experience I can bring to the club and the squad, it made me very excited to join.
“I’m really looking forward to joining up with the team after the off-season and seeing what we can achieve together over the next few years.”
Hardaker, who has won three Grand Finals, two Challenge Cups and a World Club Challenge during his decorated career, has made 46 appearances for the Black and Whites since joining the club ahead of the 2025 season from Leigh Leopards.
He has been named in the Super League Dream Team on three occasions and was crowned Man of Steel in 2015.
Applegarth is delighted to add Hardaker’s experience and competitive qualities to his York squad.
“He’s the ultimate competitor. The best compliment I can give Zak is that every game I’ve watched him or previewed against him, he’s the most competitive player on the field, and that’s what we want at York,” said the Knights head coach.
“He’s a player that’s been there and done it all in a long and illustrious career.
“We want those sort of values to reflect into bringing on our York team. We think he’s going to be great for a few of our younger lads.
“He leads by example, and I’m really looking forward to seeing him in a York Knights shirt.”
He becomes the club’s third official signing ahead of the 2027 season alongside Cameron McInnes and Max Jowitt, while Blake Lawrie has been linked with a three-year deal at the club from the NRL.
Hull FC added in a statement: “Hardaker has been released from the remainder of his contract to take up an opportunity with York Knights in 2027.
“Hardaker has made 46 appearances for the club since joining ahead of the 2025 campaign from Leigh Leopards, scoring six tries and kicking 84 goals.
“The 34-year old utility-man was awarded the club’s Player of the Year Award in his debut season.
“The club are naturally disappointed to see Hardaker depart, but accept and understand the player’s desire to secure a two-year contact in the latter stages of his career.
“The club thanks Zak for his efforts in Black & White, and wishes him the very best of luck for his future in the sport and beyond.”
