Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) has taken almighty revenge on gran Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) following the reveal that Sarah has been raising her auntie as her own child in Emmerdale.
Earlier this week, Sarah heard the full truth behind the conception of baby Leyla, and subsequently disowned Charity.
In Wednesday’s (9 September 2026) episode, Sarah was seen struggling over the enormity of what she had discovered, when husband Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) approached with Leyla.
Assuming Sarah was upset about Charity being charged with involuntary manslaughter for Doctor Caitlin Todd’s (Caroline Harker) death, Jacob tried to buoy his wife by reminding her that their little girl would get her through it all.
But Jacob has no idea that Sarah accidentally killed Todd herself, and Charity has taken the blame out of guilt.

Sarah had been contemplating how to break the news of Leyla’s true parentage, but when Leyla laughed for the first time, she was so moved that she kept the bombshell quiet from Jacob.
Sarah then headed alone to speak to Charity, Leyla’s biological father Ross Barton (Michael Parr), Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter).

She explained that she would still be bringing up Leyla as her own, and that they must all play along. Sarah would be on civil terms with Charity but it would all be an act, she insisted.
Charity pushed Sarah too far, though, when she suggested that with some time, her granddaughter may be able to forgive her.
A furious Sarah asserted that their bond had been severed for good, and walked out.

She then headed to the police station to change her statement over Todd, and before long, Charity was being questioned again by DS Thea Ramsden (Chelsea Edge).
Charity was reeling as she was informed that Sarah now claimed Charity coerced her into lying about how Todd’s death came about – and that actually, Charity had killed the woman on purpose.
Ramsden soon charged Charity with murder, and she was remanded in custody.
As Mack heard the news, Sarah lied to Jacob that her gran had forced her to cover up the murder, and Jacob backed her all the way.
But knowing that she committed the crime herself, how long can Sarah live with what she has done?
