Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition will be sold as a game-key card on Nintendo Switch 2, it’s been confirmed.
This has been up in the air since the announcement yesterday. In Japan, it was already revealed that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition would be a game-key card. We were waiting to see what would be happening the west, but now we have our answer.
Today’s update comes from VGP. The retailer confirms the game-key card situation. This means there will not be a true physical release in any part of the world.
Game-key cards have not gone over well with collectors. Unlike traditional game cartridges, players are forced to download data in order to play the game.
This won’t be the first Nintendo-published game-key card. Pokemon Pokopia was sold in that format as well.
Almost every Nintendo game has a true physical release on Nintendo Switch 2. However, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition and Pokemon Pokopia seem to be exceptions. In the case of Hyrule Warriors, Koei Tecmo is publishing in Japan. Pokemon Pokopia was handled in Japan by The Pokemon Company rather than Nintendo directly.
What makes this more interesting is what happened with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment last year. Rather than going the game-key card route, the entire data was on the cartridge.
