East Lothian Countryside Rangers say that the fish are the only venomous species found in British waters.

The rangers said: “We have been hearing reports of people being stung by weeverfish, and this can be incredibly painful.”

Weeverfish are typically found buried in sand during warm weather and low tide, with venomous spines exposed.

The rangers warned: “The best advice to avoid being stung is to always wear something on your feet when you enter the water.

“However, if you are stung, you should place your foot in as hot water as you can bear, as quickly as possible.

“After 15 minutes or so, the pain should ease.”
