Redcar MP Anna Turley shared footage of the dolphins swimming offshore and called the sight “absolutely beautiful”.

Posting on social media, she said: “What a way to start a Monday morning!

The sighting is the latest in a string of dolphin encounters along the Redcar and Cleveland coast.

The Northern Echo has previously reported on dolphins being seen around the Teesside coast, with particularly memorable sightings around Redcar, Marske and Saltburn.

More than 30 bottlenose dolphins were seen off Saltburn Pier in one day in summer 2020, with the same group later spotted at Redcar and Hartlepool.

The dolphins drew crowds and photographers, with people able to watch them from the shore.

Several more sightings were reported along the Redcar and Cleveland coast that year.

Pictures captured a pod of dolphins off Marske in July 2020, while a large group was spotted off Saltburn later that summer.

Dolphins are no strangers to this stretch of the North Sea.

A historical review found records of 16 whale, dolphin and porpoise species along the coast from the Tees estuary to Scarborough and Filey.

There have also been more unusual encounters around Redcar.

An adult male common dolphin about two metres long became stranded at South Gare in November 2022.

A member of the public found the dolphin, and British Divers Marine Life Rescue volunteers assisted by the Coastguard returned it to the North Sea.

Wildlife enthusiasts continue to watch the Teesside coast for dolphins, porpoises and other marine mammals.

Tees Valley Wildlife Trust regularly holds sea-watching sessions from Saltburn, whose clifftop overlooks the beach, North Sea and Huntcliff.

Its next social sea watch is on Sunday, September 20, when volunteers will help people look for dolphins and other marine wildlife.
