Former Hull FC half-back Josh Reynolds has opened up on the wild moment he drank bourbon on the pitch during a fierce Hull derby.
It’s fair to say Reynolds’ time at the MKM Stadium was fairly forgettable with the former Wests Tigers and Canterbury Bulldogs man making just 25 appearances for the Black and Whites. He scored seven tries in that time, but injuries and poor form ensured he underwhelmed for Hull under Brett Hodgson.
That’s not to say he didn’t have his moments though with his personality shining through and Hull fans will certainly remember what he did in what was a fiery derby against Hull KR back in 2021.
By his own admission, Reynolds bought into the rivalry and after playing a role in Bureta Faraimo’s try at the MKM Stadium, the stand-off took the opportunity to celebrate in front of the visiting KR fans. A bottle was thrown onto the field, aimed at Reynolds, and the Australian took a swig before spraying its contents up into the air.
What was in that bottle was up for debate, but four years on, the ex-Hull FC man has taken the opportunity to clear up just what he took a swig of.
“I lived in west Hull and east Hull is the KR side,” Reynolds said when speaking on the Boom Rookies podcast. “I was actually told by one of the boys, don’t go to east Hull on that week, saying, ‘they’ll do something to you’, not sure what, but they’re full on.
“Just a quick story and this is a bit of a funny one. I’m not sure if I set up or scored a try in the derby but I was very emotional, I was into it, I bought in. A lot of my mates were from Hull, lived there and it meant a lot to them. I wanted to win for them.
“We scored a try and as soon we scored all the KR fans are there. I give them a little bit and someone launched a Coke bottle on. It hit my leg.
“Me being an idiot, I had a bit of chug of it. I open the lid and I spit it back at the crowd. It didn’t hit them, I was like 30 metres away. It was bourbon, it was snuck in bourbon. I was like, ‘if I get tested here or something am I going to be in trouble?’ I’d have a defence.
“Then on social media days later, ‘what about Reynolds, thinking it was bourbon? It was urine’. That’s what they were saying.
“But I’ve tasted a fair bit of bourbon in my time, I can assure you it was bourbon. But it was a weird colour.”
