Wigan Warriors have posted their latest accounts and they show that the club has lost over £4.5 million, becoming the latest Super League team to record seven-figure net liabilities.

Such losses have almost become commonplace in Super League with most teams now heavily propped up by a wealthy benefactor and there are none wealthier than Wigan Warriors’ owner Mike Danson, who also owns the town’s football club.

As such, the alarming figure of £4,604,577 in net liabilities can be quantified by the fact that Danson is a billionaire and Wigan are very well-supported by his ownership, but it still makes for shocking reading.

Wigan are the latest Super League club to file their financial report on government website Companies House but because of the club/company’s size, they do not have to share official profit and loss statements.

Instead, the figure of over £4.6 million in losses actually comes from what their net liabilities were in 2024 and what they have grown to in 2025, with that £4.6 million figure being the difference.

Wigan Warriors’ net liabilities grow significantly

Wigan’s official company registration on Companies House is under the name Wigan Rugby League Club Limited and accounts filed on September 16th [Wednesday] reveal their financial situation.

The main numbers in question are their net liabilities from 2024 and the new figure for 2025, which show that those liabilities have risen from £14,864,912 to £19,469,489.

Also within the report, it confirms that the club’s number of employees has risen from 162 to 180 with the club continually expanding their operation and such expansions can account for some of the club’s spending, and ultimately their success.

Within the written section of the report under the ‘Going concern’ segment, it’s also announced that parent company Wigan Sporting Club Limited will continue to finance the club ‘for the forseeable future’.
