We’re well into September now, with everyone back in school, the nights getting darker earlier, and the weather (mostly) turned a little bit cooler and wetter.
Big TV shows have started to return (Drag Race UK, Big Brother), and others are right around the corner (Celebrity Traitors, Strictly Come Dancing, Bake Off), but that doesn’t mean that the various streaming services are resting on their laurels when it comes to adding great movies to their libraries.
We’ve combed through the films that have dropped across Netflix, BBC iPlayer and the like this week, so without further ado, here are our favourites.

Warner Bros.
Best movie new to Netflix this week
Crazy Rich Asians: Directed by Wicked’s Jon M Chu and starring Michelle Yeoh, the film follows a woman who flies to Singapore with her boyfriend in order to meet his family. Once there, she not only realises that they are insanely wealthy, but also that they do not approve of the relationship, and will go to some extreme lengths to break them up.
The film became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s, while sequels and spin-offs have been in development for about seven years. Any day now…

Sony Pictures

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: The second film in the acclaimed multiverse-spanning animated trilogy sees Miles Morales fighting against a new villain called the Spot.
He also joins a society of Spider-People (and pigs) from various universes, but let’s just say he doesn’t exactly see eye-to-eye with group leader Miguel O’Hara…
A word of warning: that cliffhanger ending will have you wanting to watch Beyond the Spider-Verse immediately, and it’s not out until next year. Boo!

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week
Get Out: Jordan Peele’s directorial debut was one of the most acclaimed films of the decade, with the Writers Guild of America West naming its screenplay as the best of the 21st Century.
Skins actor Daniel Kaluuya stars as a Black man who travels with his white girlfriend to meet her family, and notices some stranger behaviour from their house staff.
He discovers an incredibly twisted secret and tries to escape, but will he able to get out, or remain trapped in the ‘sunken place’?

Best movie new to ITVX this week
Rocky (1976): Does this all-time classic need any introduction? No, but we’ll do one anyway.
Written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, the rags-to-riches story sees a down-on-his-luck fighter gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fight in against world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed.
Rocky didn’t just win Best Picture at the Oscars, but it has spawned multiple sequels, has turned a set of museum steps into one of cinema’s most iconic locations, and boasts one of the most memorable movie themes ever (‘Gonna Fly Now’, not ‘Eye of the Tiger’ as that’s Rocky III).
