Netflix has confirmed the highly-anticipated release date for its thriller series The Diplomat, following a near-perfect previous season.
Sharing a new teaser trailer for the upcoming third season on X/Twitter, the streaming giant revealed that the US political drama will return to screens on 16 October.
Starring Keri Russell in the lead role as ambassador Katherine “Kate” Wyler, the show follows the character as she juggles her high-profile job and turbulent marriage.

Joining Russell on the cast are Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essandoh and newcomer to season three, Bradley Whitford (The West Wing).
The official synopsis for The Diplomat season three reads: “Kate has just accused Vice President Grace Penn (Janney) of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job.

“But now the president is dead, Kate’s husband Hal (Sewell) may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency.”
It adds: “Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (Gyasi), and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn (Whitford).”
Season two proved popular among critics, with a near-perfect current approval rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes from 46 reviews. The first season, meanwhile, earned a score of 84%.

The Wall Street Journal said: “The Diplomat is utterly entertaining, absorbing and a novel construct populated by characters with whom you want to spend time, who seem eminently human and who operate under one perfectly plausible principle: No one can trust anyone else.”
Rolling Stone wrote: “It’s entertaining because the actors are so good, the dialogue so snappy, and the overall plotting so inventive. But the whole is often less than the sum of those impressive parts, because it has much more story than it has episodes.”
The Wrap noted: “In its second season, The Diplomat weaves workplace drama with international thriller relying on complex characters dynamically portrayed by a terrific ensemble.”
The Diplomat season three is released on Netflix on 16 October. Seasons 1 and 2 are available on the platform now.
