A woman has been left seriously hurt after a fall from a bridge on the M62 motorway.

Police were called after the woman was seen ‘on the wrong side of the railings’ on the bridge at junction 22, near Rishworth Moor and Denshaw, just before 1pm on Sunday (September 20). The motorway was closed off in both directions as officers responded to the incident.

While officers were on the scene, the woman fell from the bridge at around 2.50pm, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries but not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said in a post on Sunday afternoon that a ‘post-incident procedure’ has now been initiated. A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The westbound M62 has now reopened, and the eastbound carriageway has also reopened apart from one lane following a concern for safety incident which had required a full closure in both directions between junctions 22 and 24.

“At 12.57pm today, police received a report of a woman on the wrong side of railings on a bridge on the M62 at junction 22. While officers were at the scene, the woman fell from the bridge at 2.51pm. She received injuries that are described as serious but are not considered life-threatening and is receiving medical treatment.

“A post-incident procedure has been initiated, which is normal practice for incidents such as this, and a scene remains in place as part of this process. We thank motorists for their continued patience while traffic returns to normal in the area.”

Drivers faced long delays as the motorway was fully shut in both directions. The westbound carriageway was then reopened, before one lane remained shut on the eastbound carriageway.
