Burnham-On-Sea’s Avenue Tennis Club has rounded off a busy summer of internal competitions with a packed finals day as referee Pippa Lawton and Head Coach Tim Seymour brought months of club tournaments to a close in glorious weather.
The adult finals on Sunday 20th September followed a successful morning of junior events, with committee members, volunteers, players and supporters out in force. Hot and cold drinks and food were available throughout the day as spectators watched some high-quality tennis across the club’s courts.
The club’s own championships produced a full set of 2026 winners. Ned claimed the men’s singles title with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Dan, and the pair then combined to win the men’s doubles 6-0 6-2 against Kevin and Harry. Fiona took the women’s singles after a three-set battle with Louise, 4-6 6-2 10-8, while Emily and Charlotte lifted the women’s doubles trophy with a 6-4 7-5 win over Megan and Handan.
Clare and Ned won the mixed doubles 4-6 6-4 6-2 against Megan and Sam. In the 60+ events, Frank beat Richard 6-0 6-2 in the men’s singles and then partnered Sohail to a 6-2 6-0 doubles win over Richard and John. Kathryn was a double champion, defeating Gill 6-1 6-1 in the women’s singles and pairing with Pippa to beat Shirley and Di 6-2 6-2 in the doubles. Shirley and Richard took the 60+ mixed doubles 7-6 4-6 10-8 against Pippa and Will.
Darren and Louise won the 105+ combined age event 6-1 6-2, and Dan and Kathryn claimed the 60+ combined WTN title 6-2 6-3 against Darrel and Kerry. The club also staged its Club Pickleball Championship.
Avenue Tennis Club is looking for new members of all ages and abilities. Friendly social tennis runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings, with a family-centred social evening on Fridays. Men’s practice is on Mondays from 6pm and ladies’ practice on Tuesdays from 6pm, and both team sections welcome new players.

The Winter North Somerset and South Somerset Mixed Doubles season for 2027 is approaching, with several Avenue teams competing across a range of divisions. More information is on the club website or by calling 01278 782758.

Group sessions include Cardio Tennis on Mondays from 7th September to 14th December (9.30–10.30am) and Thursdays from 3rd September to 17th December (7–8pm), plus an adult skills, drills and match-play improvers course on Fridays from 4th September to 16th October (6–7pm).
