The highly-anticipated second season of Netflix‘s hit spy thriller Black Doves is closer then ever, as the release date has now been confirmed for November along with a first-look trailer.
With Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw returning as kick-ass spy Helen and her close assassin friend Sam, season two will pick up after the brutal events of the memorably very Christmassy first season.
As the season two synopsis reveals, Knightley’s Helen is “still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organisation she serves”, known as the Black Doves, while her unsuspecting husband Wallace (played by Broadchurch’s Andrew Buchan) is “preparing to become Prime Minister”, which means that Helen is “walking a more treacherous line than ever”.

Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire will also reprise her role as the formidable and mysterious Mrs Reed, who we will find “ensnared in a ruthless plot to undermine her position in the Black Doves”.
As for Sam? “The once high-end triggerman is now reduced to lonely drinks in Soho bars and low-rate hits,” the description reveals, as he is reunited with his ally Helen.
“As they search for answers, loyalties are weaponised, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything,” the synopsis continues. “With all the explosive wit of series one, Helen and Sam’s mission leads them back to old friends and enemies, through the dark decisions and painful sacrifices of their pasts, and right to the heart of the Black Doves.”
In addition to the returning central stars, there are a number of new cast members joining for season two of Black Doves.

Ambika Mod (One Day) will play another agent of the Black Doves organisation, along with Babou Ceesay (Wolfe), who has been described as a Black Doves executive named Mr Conteh.
Sam Riley (Mint) and Neve Campbell (Scream) will also debut as new-season characters, with other returning faces including Gabrielle Creevy, Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Agnes O’Casey, and Molly Chesworth.
The series, from The Lazarus Project’s Joe Barton, became a huge hit for Netflix when it first debuted in late 2024. The show premiered with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and still sits with an impressive 92% score now, at time of writing.
Digital Spy’s four-star review branded season one “unmissable” at the time, praising the performances of its stellar cast, and also saying: “It really is a great bit of telly, bringing something fresh to the table while hitting familiar beats…”
