Castleford Tigers new signing Alfie Johnson is expected to miss the majority of his debut season with the club after confirming that he’s undergone an ACL reconstruction.

Johnson was announced as a new Cas recruit back in July with the ex-Warrington Wolves winger signing a two-year deal with the Tigers, however, he will sadly miss most of his first year.

The former rugby union man has taken to Instagram to confirm what had previously been reported, that he had suffered a torn ACL, with the 25-year-old posting an update from his hospital bed.

He becomes another Castleford recruit to suffer the cruel injury after last year’s star signing Blake Taaffe went down with an ACL in the first game of the season, something that ruled him out for the entire 2026 campaign.

Typically, ACL recovery starts at nine months and possibly up to a year, meaning Johnson could be back in around June, though he would then have to find match fitness as well.

Castleford Tigers’ signing Alfie Johnson undergoes ACL surgery

Posting on Instagram, Johnson shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed, captioned: “This one hurts… ACL reconstruction complete.

“Just another step on the journey, see you in a little while.”

Among those offering support in the comments was St Helens’ George Whitby, who also suffered the same injury that will again rule him out for the first half of the 2027 season.

Johnson is one of seven signings made by Castleford Tigers for 2027 with three of those hailing from St George Illawarra Dragons in Damien Cook, Mat Feagai and Tyrell Sloan.

They’ve also added Leigh Leopards pair Robbie Mulhern and Ben McNamara, as well as Mason Lino, with Johnson being the other recruit.

He played two games at Warrington Wolves after signing for the club after crossing over from rugby union. During his 23 games at Halifax, he scored 17 tries and established himself as one of the best outside backs in the Championship, thus earning his Super League return.
