Castleford Tigers captain Alex Mellor has confirmed his new club with the 32-year-old making a cross-Super League switch to join Catalans Dragons.

Mellor was not off-contract at the Tigers and did actually have a deal in place for 2027, however, he was allowed to leave the club with Castleford announcing in early September that their captain would depart for another opportunity in Super League.

He’d make 112 appearances for Castleford after signing from Leeds Rhinos in 2022, performing consistently throughout his five seasons despite the Tigers’ own poor form.

Catalans Dragons have now confirmed his signing with Mellor, who turned 32 two days ago, penning a two-year deal at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

He becomes Les Dracs’ latest signing with Catalans having already recruited plenty of players from the NRL and Super League, including Hull FC pair Amir Bourouh and Arthur Romano, whilst Tyson Gamble and Jesse Arthars are among those to be arriving from down under.

Catalans Dragons sign Super League veteran Alex Mellor

Mellor has 224 Super League appearances to his name, the majority of which have come at Castleford. He’s also represented Bradford Bulls, Huddersfield Giants, and Leeds Rhinos, with Catalans becoming the fifth club of his career so far.

Speaking on the move, the 32-year-old said: “I am delighted to sign at such an outstanding club and I’m so excited to take my family on an adventure to the south of France!”

Mellor will help fill a big leadership void left by the retirement of long-serving club captain Benjamin Garcia, who has taken up an off-field role with the club.

Head coach John Cartwright was keen to highlight that experience when speaking on the signing, stating: “Alex is another experienced player to add to the squad. He brings size and speed to our back row. He will be great for our young forwards to learn from.”

Mellor becomes Catalans’ eighth confirmed signing after Jesse Arthars, Tyson Gamble, Amir Bourouh, Luciano Leilua, Luca Walsh, Arthur Romano, and Joe Burgess.
