The charity said the proposed surgery was a “complex specialist procedure” and the cost of surgery, specialist veterinary care and rehabilitation was expected to be about £7,800 per eye, a total of £15,600 if both eyes can be treated.

Goodridge said: “For seals getting put under general [anaesthetic] can be really, really dangerous.

“After a lot of discussions and checks and things like that, it seems like the right time to try and give him this chance.”

Addyman added they knew there were no guarantees but “for the first time there is a real possibility that we could give Jarvis the chance to experience sight”.
