Here is a spoiler-free summary of what happened in the previous three films in the franchise.
The Mummy (1999)
Set in the 1920s, adventurer Rick O’Connell joins librarian Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Johnathan on an expedition to the lost Egyptian city of Hamunaptra.
While exploring the ancient site, they accidentally awaken Imhotep, a powerful mummy who was buried alive thousands of years earlier.
As Imhotep regains his strength, the group must race to stop him from unleashing a supernatural catastrophe.
The Mummy Returns (2001)
Several years after their first adventure, Rick and Evelyn are married and raising their young son, Alex.
Their peaceful life is disrupted when an ancient artefact connected to a legendary warrior known as the Scorpion King falls into Alex’s possession.
This sparks a globe-trotting adventure involving returning enemies, new allies and powerful forces from Egypt’s past.
Rick and Evelyn must once again save the world while protecting their family.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
The action moves from Egypt to China, where Rick and Evelyn become involved in a new supernatural threat.
Their son Alex uncovers the tomb of the Dragon Emperor, a ruthless ancient ruler who was cursed and turned into stone centuries ago.
When the Emperor is accidentally awakened, he seeks to reclaim his power and conquer the world.
The O’Connells embark on another adventure across China and the Himalayas to prevent his resurrection from changing the course of history.
However, it has been reported that the new film will ignore the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
