With so much on offer on the box, it’s sometimes quite hard to choose what to settle down and watch. And with more and more new shows being broadcast each week, the choice can become even harder.

Thankfully, we’re on hand to sift through this week’s fresh additions to find the ones that are worth your time, with five below that you should add to your watchlists.

Among them are new British crime drama Pierre featuring Sherwood’s David Harewood, where he plays a London solicitor, as well as a fresh version of a ’70s horror classic Carrie – itself based on a Stephen King book.

Pierre

Described as “gripping” by Channel 4, Pierre follows David Harewood’s titular “force of nature” solicitor who is balancing the pressures of his job, his personal life and keeping his head above water financially.

However, Pierre’s “resilience is tested when he begins investigating the suspicious death of a young black client, Michael”. He challenges the police’s portrayal of Michael, in the process uncovering a “chilling web” of institutional corruption.

Alongside Harewood, the series features Michele Austin, Jason Flemyng, Dean-Charles Chapman, Nikkita Chadha and Christopher Fairbank, and has been written by Roy Williams OBE and John Donnelly.

Pierre is available from Monday, 5 October on Channel 4.

Carrie

Prime Video premieres the latest version of Stephen King’s classic tale Carrie this week, which is touted as a “bold, timely, and surprising reinvention” of the story. Set in the present day, we meet the titular Carrie White (Summer Howell) who must deal with her overbearing mother after her father’s death.

Carrie is then plunged into the “unforgiving ecosystem of public high school”, where she is “forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence”.

The new Carrie comes from The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass’ Mike Flanagan, who has previously worked on King adaptations such as Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck.

Carrie is available from Wednesday, 7 October on Prime Video.

Josh Hartnett and Mackenzie Davis lead this new “twisty” Netflix Canadian thriller series, which follows a town that is terrorised by a mysterious sea creature. Hartnett plays fisherman Calvin Penney, who is haunted by his father’s death many years ago, and must keep his community together when the marine threat emerges.

“Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late,” the synopsis adds.

Viewers can expect a mix of “local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humor” with themes of “family, community, and change – both terrifying and inevitable”.
