NHS staff from University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) took part in the Teddy Bear Trek, walking from Poole Hospital to Royal Bournemouth Hospital to raise funds for Do It for the Kids, a campaign by the UHD NHS Charity.
The fundraiser supports the creation of comforting spaces, colourful artwork, and state-of-the-art equipment for the new children’s unit, which is scheduled to open in spring 2027.
Dr Fiona Hignett, consultant paediatrician and transformation lead for children’s health at UHD, said: “The whole UHD children’s team is so excited about moving into our new inpatient unit in Bournemouth next year.

“Moving to a brand-new children’s unit is a once in a generation opportunity, and the needs of children, young people and families are at the heart of its design.”
More than 30 staff members and their families took part in the more than 12km walk, wearing bright charity shirts and carrying teddy bears to raise awareness and funds for the project.
Janine Golding, community fundraiser for UHD NHS Charity, said: “Every step taken and pound raised helps us go above and beyond NHS funding to provide the meaningful extras that will make a massive difference for children and young people supported by our hospitals.”
Funds raised will help provide dedicated weighing scales for children who use wheelchairs, comfortable seating for waiting areas, and specialised toys for young people with diverse needs.
Donations can still be made at the UHD website.
