The Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser, who previously received acclaim for his work on blockbusters such as Dune and The Batman, is reportedly being lined up for the Beatles biopics by Sam Mendes.
The revelation was casually made by Josh Brolin during his appearance on the On Film… with Kevin McCarthy podcast, in which he was discussing the change of photography director for the upcoming third instalment in the Dune trilogy.
It’s an interesting thing because I know Greig is doing the San Mendes, the Beatles thing,” Brolin said. “He’s doing the four Beatles movies. So that’s a huge thing that takes two years and that was why he wasn’t able to do it [Dune].”
The four-part biopic series by Mendes, which is set to star Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, is slated for release April 2028, which each of the films focusing on one of the Fabs in particular.
For Fraser, it means stepping away from the films which have brought him the most critical acclaim, as he was awarded an Oscar for Dune in 2021 and nominated for its sequel, but will not return for its third instalment after being brought on board by Mendes.
Subsequently, he will also miss out on the sequel to another major hit in his filmography, The Batman, with the planned follow-up currently facing production delays.
Mendes had previously offered the role of cinematographer to his longtime collaborator Roger Deakins, but he declined for unspecified reasons.
The director said, when announcing the biopic series back in April, that his decision to split the films into four parts was justified as “Perhaps this is a chance to understand them a little more deeply.”
