Legendary golf coach Butch Harmon has shared the key lesson he learned from coaching Tiger Woods and Greg Norman. Harmon has also coached several other top players, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Ernie Els, but Norman and Woods stood out.

Harmon coached Norman between 1991 and 1996, and his work with the Australian convinced Woods to appoint him as his coach in 1993. He worked with Woods until 2004 and enjoyed tremendous success with both players, helping them reach the No. 1 spot in the world rankings.

What Butch Harmon learned from Tiger Woods and Greg Norman

Butch Harmon is one of the greatest coaches in professional golf history, and many fans will also recognise his unmistakable voice from his punditry at The Masters and other major events. He recently appeared on Golf Digest to discuss the two best players he ever coached: Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.

While Woods and Norman’s talent may have separated them from his other clients, Harmon recognised the work ethic that helped them achieve such incredible success. The 83-year-old insisted they were the two hardest-working players he ever coached.

“Greg was the man. He was the one who moved the needle at all the tournaments; the people wanted to see the great white shark. His talent level was amazing,” Harmon explained.

“The one thing I learned from the two best players that I took to No. 1 in the world, Greg and Tiger [Woods], who [both] stayed there a long time, was that they outworked everybody else. When they got to No. 1, they wanted to stay there, and they worked harder and harder.

“Let me tell you one thing: Greg Norman worked as hard on his golf game as anybody I’ve ever worked with.”
