When did you open the business?

After saving up to buy my first batch of stock and packaging materials, I started selling prints at craft fairs and online during my time at the University of Salford.

At that point, I only had 6 city prints in my shop.

Has it always been in the same location?

Since starting the business, I’ve been living in Salford, which has been handy for me to be able to trade at Makers Markets across the north west including: Warrington, Northern Quarter, Lymm, Preston, and Salford Quays.

Are you local to the area? Did you grow up here?

I grew up in Culcheth, attending Culcheth High School before I went to study Graphic Design and Foundation Art at Priestley College.

Tell me a bit about your business

I specialise in creating vibrant, playful, and highly detailed cityscape illustrations and travel posters.

My work simplifies cities and towns into iconic graphical snapshots, featuring local landmarks and hidden gems.

Why did you decide to open your own business?

Whilst studying Graphic Design at University, I taught myself to illustrate and thought I’d start by illustrating buildings.

I then began to illustrate different cities that I’d visited, such as Lisbon and Amsterdam, whilst also illustrating places closer to home like Warrington, Manchester and Liverpool.

What’s your business background?

Before starting my print shop, I hadn’t ever run a business before.

In the years since starting, I’ve sold my work at hundreds of Makers Markets, been stocked in multiple shops, and have been commissioned to create artwork for the likes of Manchester Airport and BBC Bitesize.

What makes your business different from others in the same area/field? What sets your business apart from your competitors?

I didn’t start creating this style of artwork with an aim to sell prints or to make any money at all; I simply wanted to create postcards of everywhere that I’d visited, just for me.

My illustration style came about when my love of travel met my job and studies as a graphic designer.

I spend my time researching cities (and where I can, visiting them too) to build a picture of a city; understanding it as a whole, but also focusing on the landmarks, hidden gems, and unique details that make it what it is.

By simplifying a city and honing in on its most recognisable corners, my aim is to create playful and vibrant depictions of cities, towns and villages.

Why do loyal customers return to your business?

I often see customers returning to buy multiple designs as new city prints are added to the range.

People also return and buy prints for friends and family as they make great gifts.

It’s always nice to support local small businesses too, plus I try to make my products as eco friendly as possible which is always a bonus.

What’s next? What do the next few months hold for you and your business?

At the moment, I’m planning to enter my busiest period of the year with people looking for Christmas gifts.

I’m also excited to be stocked in Curated Makers store in Manchester Arndale for the first time (from November), along with other shops that stock me full time, like the Utility Gift Stores and the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
