When I think of one band to get in the mood to make “Sweet Love”, it can only be Beyond Extinction. No, wait- I think I may have got that wrong … have I?

If guttural growls on an existential level, gnarly guitar riffs that feel like someone is trying to rip your intestines out of your body while awake are your thing, then Beyond Extinction is a band on another level of brutality, of dark, destructive songwriting that will tear at your flesh as you dip your toes into this unforgiving four-track EP; then their latest offering, Three Swords, is right up your street.

Now, I will be honest: I generally do not partake in this level of brutality; the only time I generally experience a band such as this is in the live setting where you have a lineup made of three or four very different bands genre-wise and one steps up and delivers a sound so grotesque that you feel dirty by the end of the set. So sitting down to review an EP on this level is quite an experience!

But I am no wallflower; I can handle it, I think.

Right away, what I hear harks back to one of our fave local bands here in Northern Ireland, Strangle Wire, a savage four-piece who have been at the forefront of the N.I. Metal scene for quite a while; Jasper Harmer’s vocal delivery, the depth of depravity in the songwriting, and the impact of every track on this fine EP hit like a punch to the face. Thankfully, after seeing Strangle Wire in the flesh over the years, I’m prepared for a new wave of brutal death metal like Beyond Extinction to emerge, grab that mantle, and run with it.

Clearly, this band has a solid vision, a sound honed in their own way, and, as a unit, they deliver on an epic scale that the mighty Pete Clarke (Strangle Wire Lead Vocalist) would be proud of. The first-class production lets you absorb every nuance the band throws at you. The droning background sound that frames the EP at the start, end, and between tracks adds a further disturbing undercurrent to the band’s filthy sound.

The EP itself is short and sweet, too short perhaps for many who cannot wait for a larger slice of Beyond Extinction once again, following on from their debut album ‘Where They Gather’, teasing us with a four-track EP to feed an audience with an insatiable appetite; this will have to keep the wolves at bay for now. But this is a thing of beauty, an EP in its own right that will mark a milestone in the band’s journey and cement their status as one of the UK’s most aggressive, hard-hitting bands. The ever-evolving metal scene means that nothing is off limits anymore; maybe this is the new norm. In a world that seems to have lost its mind, Beyond Extinction may make more sense now than ever.

Their Three Swords EP lands this Friday, October 23rd.

Submerged in dark and murky history, the time has come for BEYOND EXTINCTION to spew forth a new gospel of awe and terror, this time pulled from the pages of our own history books. Dragged from the most repulsive stories ever to have occurred on Essex soil, the Three Swords EP is a collection of songs harnessing the horror in the Essex mud. Where the land in the east gives up mercy, the Witchfinder begins killing. Tens of thousands die from plague. Horror and violence from the rivers. All of it held forever in the marshes. This is BEYOND EXTINCTION reaching depths more evil than thought possible.

Three Swords is out on 23rd October 2026, physical and merch pre-order open now from here: https://beyondextinction.online/threeswords.

Recently, BEYOND EXTINCTION announced they’d be bridging the gap between Essex and Canada, with a UK co-headline run alongside the aptly named Canadian exports, SALEM TRIALS. From live shows with the biggest names in the genre (Humanity’s Last Breath, Signs of the Swarm, Brand of Sacrifice + more) to releases tallying hundreds of thousands of streams, these two acts push the boundary of how low, slow and vile deathcore can truly get. In March 2027 the UK will be the site of 10 shows brimming with ferocity and live energy, with co-headline sets from each band that will throttle audiences nationwide. New music from both groups will be showcased on stages across Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Chesterfield, Stoke On Trent, Essex, Bournemouth, Bristol, London, and Brighton.

ABOUT BEYOND EXTINCTION:

“The Estuary”, “A Dark Sickness (Three Swords)”, and “Witchfinder” are the first pieces of new music since Essex’s resident death metallers released their cataclysmically anthropic debut album Where They Gather back in September 2025, which was crowned #46 in Metal Hammer’s Top 50 Albums of 2025 and labelled as “a deathcore record so feral and untamed it has the potential to become a scene standout.”

Creating a visually compelling backdrop to their music is a constant element in BEYOND EXTINCTION’s song-writing, embossing their lyrics and ambient soundscapes with personal horrors and realisations. Dense and asphyxiatingly heavy, Where They Gather offers a hazed vision of pain and loss, introspection and anthropy, and hindsight and foresight into a world that was not built for us.

2025 was not only the year that saw the fruits of their labour come into fruition in the form of their long-awaited debut album, but they’d also hit the road and performed an array of select headline dates and three successful “I was there!” moments. Co-headline shows with blackened deathcore southerners To Obey A Tyrant, Gutrectomy and Kanine, as well as an opening slot at London’s Underworld with straightedge Australians To The Grave and long-time northern savage besties Osiah, were only a warm up for BEYOND EXTINCTION. 2026 is set to only push them further, having already upped the ante with their opening slot at a sold out debut show at London’s Underworld for hardcore’s most exciting newcomers Spitting Glass.

BEYOND EXTINCTION are:

Jasper Harmer – vocals

Jude Bennett – guitars

Danny Russel – guitars

Ali – drums
