David Tuscarny will set off on January 1, 2027, to play 1,000 different golf courses in 1,000 days and hopes to raise half a million pounds for charity.

The challenge is being undertaken in memory of his mother, Jenny Layton, who lived in North Cove, near Beccles, from 1989 until 2025 and worked for Essex & Suffolk Water in Lowestoft for 20 years.

She died in January this year after living with dementia.

Explaining the motivation behind the challenge, Mr Tuscarny said: “This started with my mum.

“She loved birds, animals and being out in the countryside. Walking was her thing until dementia made her too frail to do it.

“I looked after her through dementia, and after losing her I wanted to do something in her memory that was positive, that would get me out there, and that could hopefully make a difference to other families.”

The fundraiser aims to raise £500,000, with 80pc going to Alzheimer’s Research UK and 20pc to the Golf Foundation.

Mr Tuscarny will begin at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, where he will be joined by Josh Simpson, who holds the world record for the most golf courses played in a single year.

Where clubs have multiple courses, he plans to play more than one during a single visit to create ‘bank days’ in case of bad weather, injuries, or course closures.

Each course must be a full-length layout to count, meaning at least 18 holes, or nine holes played twice, with a minimum par of 60 and a length of at least 5,000 yards.

Mr Tuscarny added: “If, at the end of 1,000 days, we’ve played 1,000 courses and raised £500,000, I’ll know it was worth every step.”
